Vertical Wind Turbine – The Pros and Cons
A vertical wind turbine is somewhat a radical change from the normal wind turbines we see being used in wind farms today. A wind turbine uses the power of the wind to turn its blades. This motion in turn is used by a power generator to produce electricity. The usual design is a horizontal one which is very similar to a propeller or a fan blade. The vertical turbine differs in design as the axis of motion is vertical to the ground, which means the turbine blades are in a standing position from the ground.
Advantages of a Vertical Wind Turbine
A vertical wind turbine can be built closer to the ground as they do not need as much wind to generate power. The generator and gear box can also be placed near the ground which makes for easier maintenance. Because they do not need much height for installation, a vertical wind turbine can be installed in chimney tops or buildings with the same height.
The installation of a vertical wind turbine is also easier as it is does not need to be pointed in the direction of the wind. The orientation of the blade allows it to be moved by the wind regardless of the direction it is coming from.
A vertical wind turbine can also be installed closer in multiples. This is because it does not disperse or the slow the wind down as with horizontal designs. Because its axis is in a vertical position it also creates less stress on its support structure.
Disadvantages of a Vertical Wind Turbine
A vertical wind turbine does have some disadvantages. The fan or blade of a vertical wind turbine is more prone to being bent or damaged by stress from the wind. Unlike the horizontal design, the force of the wind can cause the blade to flex at the point of contact. Over time this can cause a vertical wind turbine to need more repairs or replacement.
The vertical design is also limited to low wind speed environments. This limitation means that it can’t be used when wind speeds may be highly variable. Gustiness can also stall a vertical wind turbine.
What the Technology Means for You
Because the vertical turbines require less height and lower wind speeds, these can be ideal for smaller settings such as homes or buildings. They can be easily installed and can supply power. Their design can also be integrated into the architecture of modern homes or structures. The helical or vertical design makes them ideal for decorative purposes as well.
As wind power changes from an emerging to an established technology, the vertical design of a turbine can really help it to be used for homes, businesses and small communities. Advances in materials of construction, strength and conversion are continuing to be found and applied. Though they may achieve less efficiency in terms of conversion to power, vertical wind turbines does have advantages that can see its wide use in the coming years.
